Users missing from list

SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version AlmaLinux 9.2
Webmin version 2.021
Virtualmin version 7.7

I’ll get right to the point.

Virtualmin / List Virtual Servers / clicking the ‘List’ button on server with 3 users (as seen in image) and I see a list with 1 user.

When I was creating the users (via the domain’s user account), it didn’t give any errors but also didn’t give any confirmation. It simply went back to the “Edit Users” screen. I was attempting to add a “website FTP access user” when this happened.

Am I doing something wrong? Perhaps a setting that I’m overlooking?

then it didn’t do anything as it normally displays each step during user creation.

Host default domain?
Have you even created a VS for your domain ? Or are you falling into the old trap of naming your host with a real domain name?

What do you mean ‘trap’?

I have a registered domain and installed Vm as admin.domain.tld (domain.tld being fake of course), with additional entries being real domains that I have control over (including domain.tld as a user of admin.domain.tld).

If it didn’t do anything, then why does it tell me there are three users? If it didn’t do anything, that’s fine, but how do I reset/fix the counter?

(Note: I’m genuinely asking, in case the question seems defensive or combative.)

Don’t worry it isn’t.

When you created the VS did you tick the box “Accept mail for domain”? I know it is a silly question, but I’m just stepping through.

Then you select the VS from the dropdown list in Virtualmin. Then -> Edit Users -> Add user to this server and complete the form?

Create FTP User. I fill in the email address and password, give it a database to access. When I tried again just a moment ago, it gave me an error that a user with that name already exists, but still isn’t showing up in the list of users.

Now where did I suggest that?

If you -> Edit Users -> Add user to this server and complete the form You get the option to make the user an Email user and FTP User under Other Permissions (BTW that is also where you grant the user access to a database)

I have never had the need to create a FTP ONLY User and am not even sure why such a thing exists. As you can create an email only user then later make it email and FTP and you can stop email leaving FTP Only.

I would not expect a FTP Only User to appear in a table of Email Users. Also I’m not surprised of a clash if you do have an FTP Only user and try to set up an Email user with the same name. Also I’m not sure how you delete a FTP Only user.

Well to be technical, the top of the page says “FTP Users” and doesn’t say anything about Email users. But that aside, you would think it would list everyone since the menu link says “Edit Users.”

Possible bug?

Have you done a reboot or if you don’t want to reboot stop and start Webmin?

I had made a booboo and did a full reinstall of the server (minimal damage, don’t worry). Still encountering the same issue though.

A Website FTP access user is normally it for a web designer to upload there design and that all the access they need, a normal user with email & ftp can’t access the website files (from memory).

Mine on rocky9 is different, your missing a section.

So your not seeing the ftp only user in the list. Seems like a bug.

OK I just had to check this one out.
I tried to add a Create FTP User
Everything went well - no bugs - no error messages.

Note the page says “Mail and FTP Users”

So to test my theory (something that I was not explaining very well above) I went back to the VS and unticked the Mail for domain enabled
Then I get a completely different page (“FTP Users”) for → Edit Users` - no real surprise here as the users who previously had email enabled no longer are listed as such.

Note the page says “FTP Users”

So I returned the VS back to its original state Mail for domain enabled and I now can even delete that test FTP User.

So perhaps you just need to check that you have Mail for domain enabled

Just tested on clean AlmaLinux9.2 no issues.

Any chance of seeing what option toggles the “Quota and home directory settings” section from your screenshot?

-> Edit Users -> Add a user to this server or select and Edit User

Obviously (Mail) Quotas for FTP Users makes no sense (so is not available)

I mean in the Create FTP User screen. It’s not showing for me. I got the “Mail for domain” enabled so I’m seeing “Mail and FTP Users,” but not the quota section and an invisible user isn’t visible.

Also works for me when I select (Edit) a created FTP User. Obviously no “Quota”

The users (1 or 2, I can’t tell from your posts) that are not showing in edit users form can you see them in File Manager in home > yourVPS > homes ? if so what are the owner and mode? The user created by the system when the VPS was created is home > yourVPS.

Do they show up in Webmin > System > Users and Groups?

Create FTP User. I fill in the email address and password, give it a database to access. When I tried again just a moment ago, it gave me an error that a user with that name already exists, but still isn’t showing up in the list of users.

This may be a silly question but have you tried to create a user with a different name?

I’ve already done another wipe to get things working again.

Will just need to be careful about what options I play with I guess.
