Upgrading RAM on a Proxmox box wipes our all Virtualmin settings

I had a very strange experience.

I just updated RAM on a box - using Proxmox - I have done this before without issues - today when I logged back into Webmin it wanted to check my configuration.

The check failed stating the Administrator use is required.

On checking, even though the websites were still working as expected all my Virtualmin configuration was gone - The plugin section had no modules selected .

This is the error from Webmin status

Mar 29 14:11:15 mybox systemd[1]: Starting Webmin server daemon...
Mar 29 14:11:15 mybox perl[1361]: pam_unix(webmin:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= user=root
Mar 29 14:11:17 mybox webmin[1361]: Webmin starting
Mar 29 14:11:19 mybox systemd[1]: webmin.service: Failed to parse PID from file /var/webmin/miniserv.pid: Invalid argument
Mar 29 14:11:19 mybox systemd[1]: Started Webmin server daemon.

Fortunately I had a snapshot to restore to .

I did try the twice and received the same problem both times…

Maybe this is just an error on this box and nothing to do with Webmin / Virtualmin - but thought it worth mentioning .

Kind regards
Brad

When Webmin is killed without being able to properly shut down, it can leave the Virtualmin config in a bad state. I think it’s been mitigated somewhat in Webmin 2.021.

Hi Joe thanks for your reply.

Ah OK - my first attempt was throught Proxmox, stopping the server.

My second attempt I allocated the RAM and rebooted via SSH.

I will try poweroff or stopping Webmin before rebooting…
