Restore fails on single file, but not on separate files!?

I have tried the following:

  1. Created a backup of a server (Ubuntu 14.04) with 54 virtualmin servers in separate files and moved to new server (Ubuntu 18.04) via SSH. I have then restored them one by one without problem.

  2. Created a backup of the same server as above but with all servers in a single file and then moved to new server via SSH. This restore fails with this MySQL error on every virtual server: "Restore failed : DBI connect failed : Can’t connect to local MySQL server through socket ‘/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock’

Why does single file not work, but seperate files work ?? What is breaking the MySQL socket in the single file ??
