ProFTPD very slow upload and download speed

Hi,

I hope you guys can help me out.

I have a Debian 7.0 x64 virtualhost at Digitalocean, where I’m running Webmin / Virtualmin for some webpages, and therefore also a ProFTPD server.

But every time I’m trying to upload or download, I have a very poor and almost nonexistent speed (almost 2kb/s), and I can’t figure out why.

My SSH via Putty, is runing like smooth, also frontend at the webpages, but slow when I’m trying to use a ftp program (Filezilla).

I hope you can help me - I also tried Google, without any help at all.

Thank you!

Howdy,

There shouldn’t be anything in ProFTPd that would limit upload speeds on a default installation.

I’d be curious what happens if you instead log in via SFTP on port 22, and try uploading/downloading files there – do you see similar results?

Hi Eric,

That didn’t help, that’s even slower than the FTP. It’s so slow. And when I’m trying to upload via SFTP in Filezilla, I’m only uploading at 1.7kb/s.

Hi again Eric,

I’m just testing - and it looks like that, if I upload a large file (ex. 7mb), then I will upload with 200-500 kb/s (not fast, but ok) - if I then download, I’ll download with 1.5mb/s. My current internet connection is 14mb / 2mb.

So it looks like, if the query is a group of many small files, the upload speed is very slow.

And also it’s very slow getting and oping folders and showing information for the folder.

Howdy,

That may mean you’re seeing a bandwidth issue, either on your server, or on your desktop.

The first thing I’d try is to test it from another connection – maybe at another office, or a friends house, or something like that.

If it’s just as slow, you may then want to talk to your server provider to see if they have some thoughts as to why the bandwidth is so constrained.
