Postfix SMTP fails when SASL enable for outgoing mail

I have SASL required for retrieving mail via Thunderbird mail client which works well.
However, when I try to require SASL for outgoing mail, Thunderbird says the mail was sent successfully, but never is received at the destination email account.
The maillog shows these errors when this happens:
Jul 22 16:14:10 vps postfix/smtp[32032]: fatal: specify a password table via the `smtp_sasl_password_maps’ configuration parameter
Jul 22 16:14:11 vps postfix/master[1934]: warning: process /usr/libexec/postfix/smtp pid 32032 exit status 1
Jul 22 16:14:11 vps postfix/master[1934]: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/smtp: bad command startup – throttling

How do I fix this problem?
