'Official' way to update podman containers with VM plugin

SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version Ubuntu 24.04
Virtualmin version Latest Pro

I used the plugin to update a Navidrome instance with the ‘pull latest image’ option I got a success message. When I visited the URL for Navidrome I was greeted with a 500 error. Appreciate this is not likely a Virtualmin issue but wanted some guidance as to the correct way to do this safely?

Reading the VM docs it seems like the command line may be a better option.

I didn’t try to investigate why I got a 500 error as the Navidrome instance contains my music collection and I used a full server backup to restore which is far from ideal.

You need to check the logs, sometimes there might be breaking changes and then you need to recreate with the new variables if the variable handling changed. This is rare though. Check the logs.

Many apps are frequently updated, it is not clear with this podman when a new image is available.

there should be a much more straight forward process to see updates and then recreate the container with new image but same settings. The pull latest image is too hidden for me.

on the previous page there should be a button to update IMHO.

Thanks so much for your help. I didn’t check logs as I panicked a bit and simply took the nuclear option of restoring the whole VPS which yeah is far from ideal.

Maybe @Ilia will be able to implement something that would make this process a little more less challenging than it is now?

Updating the official docs with advice and guidance maybe?

you can also restore previous images - if it happens again

but not sure how in virtualmin podman - in portainer you can select an old image ID to restore it.

Can you describe in different words, with some examples, what you’re trying to do and which functionality is missing?

I will try, am out of the country for a few days so will engage with this when I get back home :+1:

I think it should show prominently when updates are available and make it less clicks and easier to do fast.

with Ai doing vulnerability checks & devs implementing new features, updating containers is a bid deal. IMO it should sit in the foreground of functionality.

Yes, I agree. This would be a good improvement.
