Linux replacement for Windows - What flavour do you recommend?

i just installed Webmin/Virtualmin on Rocky-linux 9.6 and the thing practically installed itself. I was very impressed how well RL is now supported. but I suppose I should not be surprised.

suggestion: download & install oracle-virtualbox, and then install your selected Linux on virtualbox, then play with it.

hint: hack your local etc.hosts file and make up fake domain names for testing/experimenting. i used server.com and domainname.com, both having 192.168.1.### - it worked great.

Snap is a reason to avoid Ubuntu all by itself.

I had to make a similar decision recently moving away from Windows.
I have experience with Linux servers, but not desktops. So the research ensued.

Eventually the choices boil down to what jimdunn said (Linux replacement for Windows - What flavour do you recommend? - #19 by jimdunn).

I have tried Ubuntu and its desktop for several years, and always hated how everything looks oversized and bulky. My personal opinion is that Mate desktop looks very neat and simple, but if you really want options like what you get in Windows and even MORE, the Cinnamon desktop is the richest experience I came across so far.
Eventually I settled on Linux Mint which comes with Cinnamon as a default desktop environment, and is free from Ubuntu’s Snap.

This should be easy to answer. What OS are you running on your server installs. Once answered use the same on your desktops with the DE you like. Why mix and match if it works it works.

All our servers run Debian and so all desktop and laptops run linux mint Debian edition (LMDE) because I like the cinnamon DE.

Problem solved, enjoy life.

I use debian as my primary os on my laptops (and servers) since 2011 and cannot say anything bad about it, its fantastic universal os

I don’t offer my opinion that often, not that I don’t have them, I have WAY too many
but I got in trouble recently when someone at the office asked what I thought of the Python programming language. I don’t know why, I guess I was in too relaxed a moment, and before I realized what I was doing
 I said it:

“Ugh, python is junk. I can’t stand it. It’s terrible.”

And the room. Oh my, you would’ve thought I just said lets all sacrifice the office mascot
I regret (saying) it to this day.

I use Mint on all our computers in the house. Exept the server where I use Ubuntu 22.04. More than enough for us. never windows in the house again

Answering this should be simple. Which operating system is installed on your server? Once answered use the same on your desktops with the DE you like. If something works, there’s no reason to mix and match. ucharts
