installing virtualmin

I have a dell poweredge 1600sc sitting behind me with ubuntu 11.04 with webmin 1.560 install. everytim i try to install virtualmin i keep getting this error…

Failed to install module from http://download.webmin.com/download/virtualmin/webmin-virtual-server_3.87.gpl_all.deb : Not a valid module file : tar: This does not look like a tar archive tar: Skipping to next header tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors

the machine i am using webmin on is a windows 7 box. what am i doing wrong? Besides having windows machines in my house.

tlavalle,

Try uninstalling Webmin, then:

  1. Run “wget http://software.virtualmin.com/gpl/scripts/install.sh

  2. Run “chmod 755 install.sh” after downloading.

  3. Run “./install.sh”.

This will do a full install of Virtualmin GPL directly which is the best method compared to upgrading from Webmin.

Howdy,

How are you going about performing the Virtualmin installation?

The simplest way is to use the install.sh script that you can get in the “Download” link above, but that doesn’t work on Ubuntu 11.04 – you’d need something like Ubuntu 10.04, which is an LTS release.

Alternatively, you can do a manual installation… there’s instructions on doing that here:

http://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/installation/manual

Note that the manual install is a lot more involved to get everything up and running, but it can work if using a supported distro won’t work in your case.
