Install fails on Debian 6, CentOS 6.x - software.virtualmin.com network issue?

Hello,

I’ve been attempting to install VirtualMin over the last couple hours with no luck.

My network seems to be working just fine, can pull in 200+MB of updates via package managers with no errors. I’ve confirmed gateway and DNS.

First I was trying to install on a fresh CentOS 6.2 VPS, but continually got network failures when using the virtualmin repo (I think it was virtualmin-base) that was failing.

I just reinstalled with Debian 6, and I’m getting very similar errors, here is the install.log:

I performed an apt-upgrade to make sure apt was updated, it was. Upon re-running, this is where it fails:

Any suggestions?

Howdy,

The software.virtualmin.com repository is working now – I can pull up the files that are listed above as failed – and we haven’t received other reports of problems.

However, a couple of weeks ago, someone posted a similar report, and we discovered that they were using an OpenVZ-based VPS, and were running into some resource limits.

Are you by chance using OpenVZ there?

If so, can you post your /proc/user_beancounters file?

Thanks!

-Eric

Thanks for the quick reply!

No, this should be a Xen-based VPS

root@homer:~# ls -l /proc/root_beancounters
ls: cannot access /proc/root_beancounters: No such file or directory

I must admit I’m not very familiar with virtualization nuances (or the different modules/kernel options as compared to a dedicated server).

ah, and there is no user_beancounters file either

Hmm, I’ve never seen a Xen-based VPS fail like that before.

Usually if a VPS fails, it’s because it’s setup with fairly restrictive resources, and the installation process causes those restrictions to be reached. But Xen isn’t normally setup like that.

It looks like your connection is timing out trying to access the Virtualmin repository… do you know if maybe your ISP implements some sort of firewall that blocks access to certain IP addresses?

I’m curious what these two commands output:

wget http://virtualmin.com wget http://software.virtualmin.com/gpl/

I am just having the same problem… the last package he is messing around with before error is:
virtualmin-squeeze/main procmail-wrapper

The whole screen gives:

I had quite a few similar network failures when I first started experimenting with installing Virualmin GPL some weeks ago. They were definitely not at my end. They eventually went away. Generally a network failure is no cause for concern if you can delete everything and start over, as I did.
