Any clue why? Is a fresh install

That’s not CentOS 8. It seems to be CentOS 6 (based on the el6 in all those repo URLs) which is no longer supported by anyone, including CentOS and us. It is also not a fresh OS install. Those third party repos are not part of a fresh OS install, and you cannot have a bunch of third party repos enabled and expect the Virtualmin installer to work.

Weird because i get this:

Static hostname: vmi611484.contaboserver.net
         Icon name: computer-vm
           Chassis: vm
    Virtualization: kvm
  Operating System: CentOS Linux 8
       CPE OS Name: cpe:/o:centos:centos:8
            Kernel: Linux 4.18.0-305.3.1.el8.x86_64
      Architecture: x86-64

It’s a Contabo VPS pre installed with CentOS + Webmin + LAMP

Hola @miguel84,

you should do a fresh installation on your VPS. Just start the Re-installation from the Contabo Admin Panel.
But please, don’t install it with a panel. Just install CentOS8, and select installation without panel.
When it’s done, login to your SSH and install Virtualmin along the instructions on the webpage.

That is known to be a serious mistake (just search the forum). Do not get preinstalled software from Contabo.

Really, they’ve given you a seriously fucked up system.

I echo what Joe said: the pre-installed Virtualmin system that Contabo gave you is broken. Kaput.

it is not your fault. It’s theirs. Delete the VPS that they gave you.

Create another VPS with just the OS installed and then install Virtualmin by following the automated install process: it’s just three commands. And only then would you have a working install of Virtualmin on your VPS.

As I’m a beginner, I thought that going with some software pre installed I would be covered from hacks exploits. I’ll try going from scratch then

Whoever setup that image is also a beginner. Mixing EL6 packages into a CentOS 8 system is literally disastrous. Completely nonsensical choice on their part, and can never result in a safe, secure, or even functional system.

Thanks so much for you help and insights Joe, I will have to do a bit more studying how to set all up properly
