Email question. How to get Thunderbird to connect to email

SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version Debian Linux 12
Webmin version 2.101
Virtualmin version 7.7 Pro
Related packages email

I’ve just built a new server based on Debian 12. (I was using Ubuntu).

Email is arriving correctly (3 users) but I can not for the life of me work out how to get Thunderbird to grab the messages. My Thunderbird configuration has not changed (worked all OK on the old server).

I did find under usermin >> module configuration >> Read Email … I tried changing a few things in that but no luck at all.

The Directory used for storing (one of the email addresses) is : /home/soft-focus-imagining/homes/nigel/Maildir

Could someone point me in the right direction.

Many Thanks - Nigel.

Most likely updated security eg going from SSL port to TLS port etc…

It would only be to do with your Thunderbird settings.

Virtualmin, Domain, Edit Users, Show Email Client Settings.

I did check in the email client settings and that was showing POP3 port as 995

I changed Thunderbird to use that port, but it sadly made no difference. (I even tried your 587! just in case).

Never had this issue before!

587 is not POP. That’s the submission port. It is not expected to work for retrieving mail.

You need to look in the mail log for clues about why it’s failing. We need actual errors. “It doesn’t work” isn’t useful information.

Joe,

Thanks for jumping in on this. Last night I scoured the log files and nailed it down to something not right with Dovecot (I was wrong actually), as it was not able to authorize the connection.

I then tested to see if Port 110 would work. It did but asked for a password. Which was strange because it has not changed. Put in the Password, and mail started uploading. I then switched back to Port 995 and now that works as well.

I think what threw me was that Thunderbird was giving no warning / error messages at all, until I changed to Port 110.

A simple fix that took 3/4 of a day to find!!!

Thank You - Nigel.
