cant get to the vm/wm log on page

Hello

I have a problem where I cant get to the log on page, all get is the error below.
The server is Ubuntu 8.04 runing on VMware. My sites are all running ok,its just I cant add any more or manage my existing ones

This is almost certainly a version mismatch. Make sure you are running the latest release version of Webmin and Virtualmin.

It may also be that you’ve change themes between two that aren’t quite the same in their semantics. Usually forcing a reload of the full page will resolve the problem. To force a page reload in IE, hit Ctrl-F5, and in Firefox Shift-Reload.

Thanks for the reply Joe

I have tried both in IE and FF doing a forced reload, without any joy:(

I was running the latest webmin/Virtualmin or I though I was, this server is only 3 weeks old. Would I have to use apt-get to get the latest webmin?

Or would downloading/running the install.sh script resolve the problem. I dont want to just run it in case I loose some settings/data thats already there?

If it’s a production system, you probably don’t want to run install.sh. And this is not a situation for which install.sh was intended to be useful.

And I’m not saying that having an older version is the problem…I’m saying that running, for example, the latest version of Virtualmin (or the Virtualmin Framed Theme) without also running the latest version of Webmin is asking for problems. (e.g. we sometimes add new features to Virtualmin that require changes to Webmin.)

Though this particular one doesn’t sound familiar. Have you tried restarting Webmin? Now that I’m paying closer attention to the actual error this actually looks like the web-lib library isn’t loaded, actually, which is pretty much impossible in any version of Webmin or Virtualmin.

I have just ran /etc/init.d/webmin restart and I still have the same problem.

One thing that might help is I can still use usermin on port 20000 to check emails

Any clues in the Webmin log? (Usually /var/log/webmin/miniserv.error)

Just my luck, I dont have a webmin folder in /var/log

Is there somewhere else I should be looking?

Oops… /var/webmin/miniserv.error is the usual. It’s not in /var/log.

Just to follow up in public, just in case anyone is searching and hitting this problem, or something similar:

web-lib-funcs.pl (where most Webmin core functions live) was corrupted, and missing about 100 lines midway through…when I did a Perl syntax check on web-lib.pl and web-lib-funcs.pl the problem was immediately obvious. I don’t know why/how the corruption occurred, but replacing the file with the original solved the problem.

I am sure it was a dirty shut down that might of caused the problem in the first place as this is what has just happend and caused the problem once more

I think as soon as I get it up I am going to back everything up and build a new box and put VM pro on it!

Hi Will,

First off, I’ll offer that it’s a little unusual for files to become corrupted that frequently. You might want to verify that you aren’t having any hard drive issues.

For example, do you see anything unusual after running “dmesg” from the command line? Sometimes when a disk is having problems you’ll see errors towards the end of the dmesg output.

That said, the file /usr/share/webmin/web-lib-funcs.pl is part of the Webmin package.

You can download the Webmin source here:

http://webmin.com/download.html

Verify that you’re downloading the right version – it sounds like you’re running Debian or Ubuntu, meaning you can check what Webmin version you have by running:

dpkg -l webmin

After downloading Webmin, you can unpack that and copy the web-lib-funcs.pl over top of your corrupted one.

I have now got webmin up and running again

After logging in to vm/wm I noticed that there were some updates that needed installing, so I installed them. They all looked like they installed fine So I rebooted and I could still log in on port 10000 all good so far. I then tried to get to one of my sites and nothing displays, not even an error. I have tried from a different workstation and even from a differenr network with out any joy.

Everything else is working ok mail, usermin, etc

Could one of the updates caused this or could it of been something to do with the webmin file?

update

I know that apache is running as when I try and browse to a non existent page I get an apache 404, I have also added a new domain with directory browsing enabled and thats working ok. Whats not working is a PHP-nuke site and a wordpress site.

I hope the above info sheds any more light on my problem!

ok I think I am getting somewhere, a .htm file is working so I guess it must be a PHP thing, but I am unsure on what to do next?

Sometimes I wonder if its worth me trying to move away from MS based products, I hope it will be worth it, cos at the moment i feel like a school kid again with all this learning lol

Right, this is where I am up to now.

from webmin I went to the PHP configuration link and this is what I got

"No PHP configuration files were found. Adjust the module configuration to set the correct path to the global PHP config file."

This is what is in the module config

/etc/php4/apache/php.ini=Configuration for mod_php
/etc/php4/cgi/php.ini=Configuration for scripts run via CGI
/etc/php4/cli/php.ini=Configuration for command-line scripts

when I click on save goes it just goes back to the first error

No PHP configuration files were found…

What do I have to do?

So, Apache and Webmin/Virtualmin are wholly unrelated–one running has no impact on the other. And, of course, Webmin/Virtualmin do not use PHP for anything, so that’s also a dead end (Webmin and Virtualmin are predominantly Perl, with a touch of JavaScript, Java, and C).

If you’re seeing file corruptions regularly (even once is suspicious), there is something serious wrong on your system. Package updates should never lead to something like that unless the system were shutdown in the middle of the process of installing something (and even then, I would think it probably wouldn’t act this way…though that doesn’t mean shutting down improperly is recommended).

Is this, perhaps, a virtualized system of some sort? I can imagine something like this happening if you have two virtual instances running off of the same disk image. I’m having trouble thinking of any other cause of this particular behavior, short of actually actively editing files and removing pieces of them, which I’m pretty sure is not what’s happening.
