Backup / Restore Steps

Virtualmin Team,

Kudos on the “How to Migrate” doc at https://www.virtualmin.com/documentation/system/migrate

Quick question, if I’m going to a new server with virtualmin installed and configured exactly the way I want it… is it necessary for me to do the following step:

virtualmin restore-domain --source /root/backups/virtualmin.tar.gz --all-virtualmin

or, can I just do this step and be ok?

virtualmin restore-domain --source /root/backups/ --all-domains --all-features

The reason I ask, is because I skipped the --all-virtualmin step, and the restore didn’t restore my server aliases, it only restored the primary domains, without any server aliases.

Thx!

Howdy,

Virtualmin would not re-create automatically created aliases when restoring the backups – those aren’t considered part of the Virtual Server, those are considered to be part of the Virtualmin settings.

If you want it to create those automatic aliases during the restore process, you’d need to configure them in System Settings -> Server Templates -> Default -> Virtual Server Creation. Or first restore the virtualmin.tar.gz file.
