SYSTEM INFORMATION
OS type and version 22.04
As i can see Webmin 2.103 and Usermin 2.003 released. When i am installing virtualmin i am getting Webmin 2.101
i installed virtualmin from commands provided on official virtualmin website.

wget https://software.virtualmin.com/gpl/scripts/virtualmin-install.sh
sudo sh virtualmin-install.sh

How can i get latest Webmin 2.103.

@sanjeevone,

Webmin releases are generally more frequent then the version packaged with Virtualmin.

However, the version available from Virtualmin repo has gone through additional testing to ensure it’s stable and compatible with the current version of Virtualmin hence why a version of Webmin may appear out of date.

Always install only the version of Webmin from Virtualmin repo.

*** Same goes for Usermin ***

I’ll add that this has been discussed many times here in the forums.

You can trust that we know when there is a newer Webmin or Usermin version (we maintain all this stuff), and that we have reasons for not rolling it out to Virtualmin users. Virtualmin repos will not get 2.103 (because of a bug), but will likely get 2.104.

with all due respect, when 2.103 (or any new Webmin release published at webmin.com) was identified having an incompatibility with Virtualmin, a quick forum post would have let us all know and then we would not be wondering :slight_smile:

I post to the News forum every time there is an update to Webmin or Usermin in the Virtualmin repo. If you don’t see a post about it in News, it’s not yet recommended for Virtualmin users.

And, of course it’ll show up in the software updates page in Virtualmin, too.

Joe, Webmin 2.104 and Usermin 2.004 has been released. So does it means now available is virtualmin official repo. I mean now if i install virtualmin will i get the latest webmin.

Thankyou

@sanjeevone,

As previously discussed, once the team has vetted the code for the new version(s), and they are deemed compatible with the current version of Virtualmin they’ll be made available in the Virtualmin repo.

Allow me to further explain why they are not immediately made available…

Webmin has been an open source “control panel” allowing system admins to manage their Linux based servers in a graphical environment (GUI) for a few decades now.

Virtualmin was introduced, and in a nutshell is a module that sits on top of Webmin (though that’s really putting it lightly as it’s so much more under the hood).

Webmin is used by the masses without Virtualmin, so when a new version is made available, it doesn’t necessarily play well with Virtualmin out of the box, as functionality may not be aligned between the two products.

If you use Webmin for a system admin tool to manage things like “clusters”, “dns”, “mail”, etc without the need for Virtualmin (primarily used in this manner by advanced users for specific needs), then when Webmin launches a new version you get that copy almost immediately.

However, as mentioned earlier, before the new version becomes available to the Virtualmin users, it needs to go through further vetting to ensure that it will play well with Virtualmin.

Long story short, once the vetting has been done, and the version is deemed ready for use with Virtualmin it’ll be made available in the Virtualmin repo and it’ll be installed just like any other software package update.

That being said, @Joe has already indicated the current version may not necessarily make it to the Virtualmin repo as it may contain a bug that affects Virtualmin users.

Remain patient, and when the next release of either Webmin or Usermin are ready to debut, they’ll be made available to the Virtualmin repo.

Ok thankyou :slight_smile:

@sanjeevone,

Long before Virtualmin came onto the scene, large corps, many of whom you likely work on the daily or occasionally, use Webmin in their IT department for internal system administration.

Virtualmin on the other hand was designed to compete with the likes of cPanel and other front-facing panels that allow you to give your users a control panel to manage their website.

Essentially, with a single click of the mouse, in many cases literally dozens of tasks are issued by the system instead of you having to manually do these tasks individually.

As a senior system administrator, this makes life so much easier on the day-to-day.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

No! It means 2.104 will now begin the additional testing we do before rolling it to Virtualmin users. I do not know if it will go to Virtualmin repos, or if we’ll find more things in need of fixing. It is likely 2.104 (or any given Webmin release) will show up in the Virtualmin repos, but it will not instantly appear there.

Webmin updates will never appear in the Virtualmin repo immediately when a new release happens. It always (except in the case of a security bugfix) trails the Webmin update release by a couple/few days. There should not be an expectation that Webmin updates will appear in the Virtualmin repos at the same time they happen in the Webmin repositories.

I don’t know how to be more clear about it. Virtualmin is downstream of Webmin in this regard, and you can think of Virtualmin as a “distribution” that contains Webmin and a bunch of other packages, and it receives additional integration testing as a distribution rather than in isolation.

You will see me post about it in the News forum, and you will see it in the available updates in Software Updates in Virtualmin when it becomes available.

Joe, If i take risk and install the .deb file of webmin by downloading from webmin official website after installing virtualmin, will it be any issue. I mean i can take the risk because i want the functionality.

Thankyou

You don’t need my permission. Go nuts.
